When Is Root Canal Treatment Needed?

Root canal treatment becomes necessary when the pulp — the soft tissue inside your tooth containing nerves and blood vessels — becomes infected or severely inflamed. This can happen due to:

• Deep decay that has reached the pulp
• A cracked or fractured tooth
• Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth
• A traumatic injury to the tooth

Symptoms include severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling around the tooth, or a persistent pimple on the gum. However, some infected teeth cause no symptoms — which is why regular check-ups matter.

What Happens During the Procedure

1. Anaesthesia — Local anaesthesia numbs the tooth and surrounding area. You should feel no pain during the procedure.
2. Access Opening — A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth.
3. Pulp Removal — The infected pulp is carefully removed using rotary endodontic instruments.
4. Canal Cleaning & Shaping — The canals are cleaned, disinfected, and shaped.
5. Filling — The canals are filled with a biocompatible material and sealed.
6. Crown — A crown is usually placed over the treated tooth to restore strength and prevent fracture.

Most root canals are completed in one or two appointments.

After Your Root Canal

Mild soreness for a day or two after treatment is normal and manageable with standard pain relief. The tooth itself is no longer vital, so it will not hurt the way it did before. Protect the treated tooth with a crown as recommended — back teeth are at higher risk of fracture without one.
