Dental Crowns — When Are They Needed?

A dental crown covers the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gumline. Common indications include:

• A tooth that has had root canal treatment (to prevent fracture)
• A severely cracked or broken tooth
• Large cavities where insufficient healthy tooth remains for a filling
• A tooth with a large, worn-down filling
• Cosmetic improvement of a misshapen or severely discoloured tooth

Modern crowns are typically made from zirconia or porcelain-fused-to-metal, chosen based on the location and function of the tooth.

Dental Bridges — Replacing Missing Teeth

A dental bridge spans the gap left by one or more missing teeth. It is supported by crowns placed on the teeth on either side of the gap, with a false tooth in between.

Bridges are a fixed, non-removable solution — cemented in place and functioning like natural teeth. They are particularly well-suited when the adjacent teeth already need crowns, or when implants are not preferred.

The Crown or Bridge Process

1. Preparation — The tooth is shaped to create space for the crown. An impression is taken.
2. Temporary Crown — A temporary restoration protects the tooth while your permanent crown is fabricated.
3. Fitting — The permanent crown is checked for fit, bite, and appearance, then cemented into place.

The process typically takes two appointments over 1–2 weeks.
