When Is Extraction Necessary?

• Severe Decay or Damage — when the tooth is too broken down to restore with a crown or filling.
• Impacted Wisdom Teeth — wisdom teeth that are trapped in the jawbone or growing at an angle, causing pain, infection, or damaging adjacent teeth.
• Advanced Gum Disease — when bone loss has progressed to the point that the tooth is mobile and non-restorable.
• Orthodontic Treatment — some cases require removal of one or more teeth to create space for alignment.
• Retained Baby Teeth — milk teeth blocking eruption of permanent teeth.

Simple vs Surgical Extraction

Simple extraction — performed when the tooth is fully erupted and visible. Local anaesthesia is used and the tooth is loosened and removed with forceps. This is quick and straightforward.

Surgical extraction — required when the tooth is impacted, fractured at the gumline, or has curved roots. A small incision may be made in the gum, and the tooth is sometimes sectioned for easier removal. The area is sutured after extraction.

Recovery and Aftercare

Most patients recover within a few days. Key aftercare guidelines:

• Bite on the gauze provided for 30–45 minutes after the procedure to control bleeding.
• Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using straws for the first 24 hours — this protects the blood clot in the socket.
• Eat soft foods and avoid the extraction site for the first 2–3 days.
• Avoid smoking, as this significantly increases risk of a dry socket.
• Take prescribed pain relief and antibiotics as directed.
